The Association for the Future of Film and Television is hosting a kickoff event for its Chattanooga chapter tonight from 6:00-8:00pm at the EPB building downtown. The local chapter hopes to increase interest in local film as well as increase Chattanooga’s profile in the film and television industry. According to the sponsors, several local dignitaries will be in attendance, along with board members from other AFFT chapters.

In related news, the planning board has approved the new downtown movie theater. The Arts & Education Council, sponsors of the Independent Film Series at the current Bijou, are lobbying for a dedicated screen at the new location for independent and art films. The AEC is seeking feedback on whether local residents would support such a screen, and we hope your answer is yes. Don’t make us lock you in a screening room with Beverly Hills Chihuahua on repeat.

  • As a film student that is looking to get into the industry of feature filmmaking I must say that in order for Tennessee to bring in the industry, the incentive package needs to be structured properly.

Currently, it is a series of hoops that industry professionals must jump through to get up to 32%. That is, of course, based heavily on the fact that the project is a $1,000,000+ feature budget with the production company based in Tennessee. Unfortunately, that isn't attractive to outside production houses.

Here is an article that provides some insight into other states' successful incentives: http://lafilm.org/media/index.cfm?id=264

If Tennessee lawmakers were able to mimic the successful incentive packages to some degree, there is no doubt in my mind that Tennessee would start getting more Industry business; therefore increasing the workforce and boosting local economies.
