In April, we profiled Young Monster, a local design and printing collective. This weekend, the monsters are unleashing an "aesthetic attack" on Chattanooga with a benefit concert at JJ's Bohemia and the launch of their new clothing line at the Chattanooga Market.
"Young Monster Weekend" kicks off at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night with Coral Castles, Forest Magic and Giant Tiger at JJ's Bohemia. According to Nick DuPey, the members of all three bands have played together in several previous bands, so the show promises a few collaborative surprises—including a possible reunion of Gold. Proceeds from the door will go to Young Monster, and a selection of limited-run prints will be available.
The monster weekend continues on Sunday, when the crew will set up shop at the Chattanooga Market for the first public sale of their summer clothing line. The clothing line features new and repurposed goods ranging from t-shirts to skirts and headbands. All the goods, including gig posters and art prints, are handmade, hand-printed or hand-altered and range in price from $20-60.
Young Monster will officially launch a new web site and online store next Monday. Future projects include gig posters for Sonic Youth and Black Diamond Heavies, as well as a series of limited-edition "Young Monster vs. Chattarati" shirts.
According to DuPey, the members of collective are extremely competitive, always pushing each other to stretch their design chops. In an email, he writes, "The best thing about being involved in Young Monster is the level of competition among the designers. We are all really excited to be working with and against each other - makes for a really electric process."
