Today's Tennesseean offers a new twist on the old Maglev to Atlanta story. Chattanoogans have been hearing about high-speed rail between our two cities for some time, including the popular "second Atlanta airport" hypothesis. According to this article, officials from Tennessee and Georgia are studying the feasibility of an estimated two-hour Maglev route from Atlanta to Nashville, via where else? Chattanooga. But don't get your hopes up too quickly...
Officials admit the Atlanta-to-Nashville corridor doesn't top the list of all the high-speed rail projects in the country, but proponents contend it's time to give them serious consideration.
The article goes on to say that the long-term goal is to connect all the way to Chicago, but that the Atlanta - Chattanooga - Nashville line is not even at the top of the list of potential Maglev projects. An Anaheim-Las Vegas corridor is the most likely candidate for the first Maglev route in the United States, interestingly because "They have a huge backing and support from the casinos." Perhaps if we can get some riverboat gambling action near Ross' Landing, we can move up the queue.

I have always been in favor of mass transit. Our current transit system is atrocious. Bosnia would be ashamed of our rails or lack thereof.
