Weekendist: Chattanooga Market, Slampoze and Cornbread!

It's another beautiful weekend in Chattanooga. Here's a roundup of events for you to enjoy:



  • The Chattanooga Market opens Sunday, bigger than ever.  

  • Rhyme N Chatt is proud to bring the Spoken Word Poetry Slampoze back to Chattanooga in observance of April being National Poetry Month. Admission and participation to this year's event is only a $1 donation at the door. This is one of Rhyme N Chatt's most successful community events and is open to all ages. There will be performances by local dance teams, and the performance poets of Rhyme N Chatt Interactive Poetry Organization. Interested participants should be sure to register in advance to guarantee your competition spot by calling 423-544-1597 or emailing them at rhymenchattpoetry@comcast.net to request a registration form. Registration is free.  

  • The 13th annual National Cornbread Festival is Saturday and Sunday April 25 & 26 South Pittsburg, TN. Go and eat some cornbread! Be sure to check out the cook-offs, the beauty pagaent and some arts & crafts. If you eat too much there's even a 5K race to burn all that food off.




  • For the kids who like to run/bike/run, a lot: The 2nd Annual Scenic City Duathlon is happening Saturday April 25 at Chester Frost Park in Hixson. That race starts at 2:00pm and is recommended for ages 12 and under. The race includes a 3/4 mile run, 3.5 mile bike, 3/4 mile run. Ages 5 And under will have 75 yard run, 150 yard bike, 75 yard run.

  • At the Chattanooga Zoo there is a Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 25th from 11:00am-3:00pm. Be a hero for the planet with Wolverine and learn about the environment with fun activities for kids and adults. Booths will be set-up throughout the Zoo with information about outdoor activities, making sound environmental decisions, and protecting wildlife. Zoo members receive FREE admission to this event (must present membership card at Zoo entrance).

  • The Tennessee Aquarium & IMAX 3D Theater is also hosting a Party for the Planet presented by Comcast on Saturday, April 25, 2009:
    As part of Comcast Cares Day, the event will follow a morning of trash pick up, tree planting and removal of invasive plants in four different locations. We will celebrate Earth Day with family fun, entertainment, special feedings, educational demonstrations and close-up encounters with our animals. Our goal is to inspire wonder and appreciation for nature and encourage our guests to learn what they can do to take better care of our planet.Conservation-oriented programs will take place on the Aquarium plaza and throughout both buildings, River Journey and Ocean Journey.  


  • The Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore is hosting its 2nd Annual Spring Donation Drive that will be ending on April 25. The person, business or contractor who donates the most will win a $1000 Home Depot Gift Card. Donations will be accepted at Home Depot locations in Hixson and Gunbarrel every Saturday during the event from 9am – 2pm. If you can’t make it on Saturday, need a pickup or have questions, call the ReStore at 423-634-1004. For a full list of acceptable items, please visit www.habichatt.org/restore.   • For the lovers of all things chocolate there is the 2nd Annual Chocolate Fling and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 25 at Bessie Smith Hall, 200 ML King Blvd. This event supports the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee.

  • Earth Dayz continues up at Rock City this weekend. Activities include: Rock City Raptors Birds of Prey Shows, Storytelling & Hands-on educational art activity with Jim Pfitzer.

  • Ecumenical Earth Day in Dalton, GA on Sunday April 26, 2009 12:30 pm until 3:30 pm at Christ the King Lutheran Church 623 S. Thornton Ave. Dalton, Georgia. Ecumenical Earthday is a free afternoon of fun, animals, exhibits, entertainment and more in praise of Gods creation and to remind us of our role as stewards of the earth.

  • The 3rd annual Scenic City Triathlon 4/26. The race starts at 7:30am, and the transition area opens at 6:00am. All athletes must have either an annual or 1 day USAT License. Including all relay team members. Both annual and 1 day will be available on site. 1 day license is $10.00 this price is not included in your registration.
