Follow the Money: Mayoral Campaign Expenditures

By David Morton | Feb. 27, 2009, 4:14 p.m.

Chattarati's Cash Maps allow you to follow a local candidate's political contributions, but have you ever wondered where that money goes once it enters his/her campaign coffers? No, we're not launching a new application just yet, but we were curious about where the two mayoral candidates spent the bulk of their money in pursuit of elected office. Most of a campaign's money is spent on consulting, advertising, and administrative costs. In the case of both incumbent Ron Littlefield and challenger Rob Healy, part of that money gets spent on firms outside the Chattanooga area, but the majority goes into local ad buys for TV and radio.

We'll start with Ron Littlefield, who raised $184,943 in contributions for the general election. His expenditures total $120,804 from July 2008 to February 2009. Here is a summary of his advertising and consulting expenses:

Challenger Rob Healy raised $54,209 in contributions, and spent $49,123 during the campaign:

  • $12,442 - TV advertising.

  • $8500 - radio advertising.

  • $7272 - ImageWorks for printing.

  • $4,161 - TN Valley Sign & Printing for printing.

  • $3217 - For media consulting, PR, and web support.

  • $2175 - Print and web advertising.

  • $967 - Additional printing.

This data was taken from the candidates' financial disclosure forms. The forms will be available for download on Monday, March 2.

Littlfield can buy the mass media, he can buy the T.V. stations, he can buy the PACs, he can buy the unions, and he can buy the uninformed voters. But he can't buy the truth. Truth be told, Littlefield hasn't done a single thing for Chattanooga that he can list on resume as an accomplishment all his own. Vote March 3rd.

His planning experience in Chattanooga dates all the way back to 1974. Much has changed since then wouldn't you say? As with any metropolitan area, nothing is done by one single person. It requires large teams of people. So you are right about one thing - there is not much on there that he claims he did alone.

Also checked out your YouTube page. I see that that in addition to all of the creepiness, you are also a huge Sex and the City fan.

Who woulda thunk Billy had the hots for Kim Cattrall? I guess after writing all of those anonymous posts everywhere it's nice to curl up and catch up on the Carrie/Big romance? Too funny! I will be laughing myself to sleep tonight thinking about that.

I hope you already voted, and pray that you will find something better to do with your time during next four years regardless of who wins.

    Cheers.
