Dan Johnson Joins the Wamp Campaign

By David Morton | March 25, 2009, 6:49 p.m.

Dan Johnson, Chief of Staff to Mayor Ron Littlefield, joined Representative Zach Wamp's campaign for the GOP nomination in Tennessee's 2010 gubernatorial race today. The retired accountant will serve as Treasurer for Rep. Wamp, according to a campaign press release. The Mayor's office says that Mr. Johnson will continue as Chief of Staff, too.

The announcement came alongside several appointments for the Wamp campaign earlier this morning:

Bob Davis, Nashville public affairs executive, will serve as Campaign Chairman; Bill Baxter, Knoxville business leader, will serve as State Finance Chairman; John Crisp, Nashville public affairs executive, will serve as Campaign Strategist and Communications Consultant; Ed Goeas, national pollster, will serve as General Consultant and Pollster for the campaign. Dan Johnson, current Chief of Staff to Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield and the founder of a well-respected Chattanooga accounting firm, will serve as Campaign Treasurer; Ammon Smartt, an attorney with the Nashville law firm of Waller Lansden, will serve as Legal Counsel for the Wamp campaign.

The Republican primary will occur on August 5, 2010. In addition to Rep. Wamp, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Shelby County District Attorney General William Gibbons are running as GOP candidates. While the GOP race has attracted several high-profile contenders, only one Democratic candidate, Kim McMillan, has formally announced her intention to run. Harold Ford, Jr. and Andy Berke have been floated as potential candidates for the Democratic party as well. Mr. Johnson co-founded Johnson, Hickey and Murchison in 1977. He retired from the accounting firm to join the Littlefield administration following his own mayoral campaign in 2005.
