Mayor Submits List of Department Heads for Second Term

By David Morton | June 18, 2009, 8:40 a.m.

Tuesday, Mayor Ron Littlefield submitted the names of city department heads to the Chattanooga City Council for his second four-year term.

The City Charter requires the Mayor to submit a list of appointments to the council within 60 days of inauguration. Council members will have 30 days to give a straight, 'up or down' vote on the appointments. The City Council will discuss the appointments at the next Legal and Legislative Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 23. From there, the body will need to put a formal resolution on a council agenda to be voted on during a regular, legislative session.

Mayor Littlefield's list consists of all current department heads along with a proposal to appoint interim City Attorney Mike McMahan and interim Chattanooga Fire Department Chief Randy Parker to their respective positions.

In a statement, Mayor Littlefield said:

The City of Chattanooga is fortunate to have talented, dedicated individuals heading each department. Our achievements are due to the hard work and cooperation of these leaders and the teams they have assembled. It's a proven Team. With the addition of Randy Parker as Fire Chief and Mike McMahan as City Attorney, we will continue to build upon that success.

I would totally call some of these departments to as them if they are happy with their appointments, but this is Chattanooga: city departments don't respond to citizens.

You Chattarati types should get Mayor Littlefield and Josh McManus On Record with respect to whether or not the Stand initiative was communicated in advance to City of Chattanooga...I say it wasn't, and I base my assertion on conversations with both men...

CORRECTED POST: I made an error of fact with respect to the timeline of the STAND initiative being communicated to The City of Chattanooga in general and Mayor Ron Littlefield specifically. Upon reviewing my notes and undertaking additional research - including but not limited to a new round of discussion with the principals - I now know Josh McManus and J.Ed Marston did indeed meet with Mayor Littlefield in advance of rolling out STAND. I regret the error and I am happy to set The Record straight...
