First Friday Five: Help Girls Inc. Provide Science Camp Scholarships

By John Hawbaker | Feb. 6, 2009, 8 a.m.

First Friday Five is a new project to organize one-day online fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations. Read on to learn about this month's goal and how your $5 donation can help.

Girls Inc. of Chattanooga, the first participant in First Friday Five, hopes to raise $300 which would provide scholarships for three girls to attend their Discovery Girls Science Camp (March 16-20). The camp is designed to expose girls to opportunities in the science and technology fields and encourage them to pursue career paths in those fields. Your donation of $5 will help provide a scholarship for an at-risk or low-income girl to attend the camp and "inspire her to be strong, smart and bold."

"The Discovery Girls Science Camp helps introduce science and technology fields in a fun, girl-only environment with girls from income and cultural backgrounds. There’s still a gender gap in these professional fields, which we’re trying to close since science and technology jobs are among the highest paying fields." -Bea Lurie, President & CEO of Girls Inc.

Update: Over $700 was raised for Girls Inc. today! Thanks to everyone who gave and helped spread the word.

About Discovery Girls Science Camp (provided by Girls Inc.)

"At Girls Inc., we believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. By encouraging girls to pursue science and technology, we’re working to encourage girls to stay in school, pursue post-secondary education and find a career that will provide them with life-long financial stability." -Cora Lanier, Director of Program Operations Spring Break, March 16-20, 2009 Calling all junior scientists! Girls Inc. is now recruiting girls for the 2009 Discovery Girls summer day camp. Our one-week spring break camp will introduce a multi-cultural and economically diverse group of girls to the exciting world of science and technology fields. Through hands-on activities, girls will explore, ask questions, and solve problems. They will also learn about career options in science and technology through interactive presentations from professional women working in these fields at local companies. Girls will take a fun field trip to the brand new Tellus Museum in Cartersville, Ga. Throughout the week, they will learn about astronomy, earth science, physics and biology. The camp will run from March 16-20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available for additional fees. Camp fees are $100.

Robert T. Nash, you're a Prince! LOL ... today. Sometimes you're that other word that starts with P. We do love the way you stir it up, and you make excellent points in your own angry-man way. Maybe you should try yoga sometime...you know ...feel the love...let go of all those things that upset you. OMG what am I saying? DON'T EVER COME DOWN HERE to ClearSpring! I don't want to be skewered! Love ya, Stephanie

As of noon, we've raised $345! Thank you to the Chattanooga community for being so generous. Every $100 raised means another low-income girl can attend science camp.

Every 20 people who donate $5 helps a girl.

    Thank you!

We're just shy of sending 5 girls to camp. Due to the generosity of Chattanoogans, we've raised $490.

This really means a lot to all of us at Girls Inc. Thank you!

With pledges from offline donations, we've cleared $600. That's twice our goal!

Thank you so very much to everyone who contributed to First Friday Five to help low income girls attend our Spring Break camp. Because of your generosity, we have raised enough money for 6 girls to attend the camp. Our camps open up an exciting world for all of our participants and give them the opportunity to get to know girls from Signal Mountain to East Chattanooga. They get to celebrate diversity and just enjoy learning and having fun together as girls.

Check us out on Facebook, our blog and Twitter to keep abreast of our programs and to see photos of the camp at the end of March.
