New Democratic Candidate Expected in Third District Race

By Joe Lance | Aug. 13, 2009, 3:56 p.m.

TN03 has learned from a Democratic Party source that Chattanooga physician Brent Davis Staton will be announcing a decision whether to join the Third District race "in the near future." There had been unconfirmed reports for several weeks that Dr. Staton was eyeing a run.

Staton's entry would increase the number of Democrats in the race to three. He would join Paula Flowers, former Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance, and an Oak Ridge resident; and Brent Benedict, a systems analyst from Chattanooga, who will, one supposes, help determine if there is "room enough for two Brents" in this race. Benedict was the Democratic Party nominee against Congressman Zach Wamp in 2006.

There are considerably more Republicans seeking their party's nomination. The district has elected representatives from both parties over the years.
