Names You Might Not Know

By Joe Lance | Aug. 17, 2009, 8:30 a.m.

Matt Wilson gives a few of the lesser-known GOP (and one turned independent) Third District candidates some Saturday press:

Who are Tommy Crangle, Mark DeVol, Greg Goodwin and Art Rhodes?

And what makes them think they can beat former Tennessee Republican Party Chairwoman Robin Smith's name recognition, attorney Chuck Fleischmann's money and Bradley County Sheriff Tim Gobble's security background in the Republican primary race for Tennessee's 3rd District congressional seat?

(HT: Post Politics)

Note: There are at least two more GOP candidates, according to finance disclosure experts OpenSecrets.org. Kris Holzmeyer, a Baptist minister, has a campaign Web site and a Twitter account. Van Irion, a Knox County attorney, can legally run in the Third, even if he (apparently) lives in the Second District. More on this candidate is coming in a separate post.

I love that Matt's original editorial skips over the reason the Robin Smith has such name recognition. At least Fleischmann and gobble receive some experience points. It was under Smith's watch that the Tennessee GOP distributed some of the most offensive and racist bull sh** seen during the previous election. Name recognition might be important when trying to rally votes but how about we elect someone with actual skills, experience, and values? Not a radical, career politico.

Was Robin Smith head of the State GOP when the infamous playboy bunny, call me ad campaign If so, were these ads funded by the State GOP or the Corker campain. I was just never clear on hit the approved button what I view as the most ruthless campaign ad in Tennessee history.

Never mind, I found the GOP commercial from 2006, the national GOP assumes responsiblity for the content at the end.

To date, the only candidate of which I'm aware is Mark DeVol; and his status is murky. He has told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that he is running as an independent, but I believe his initial FEC paperwork was filed as a Republican.

As soon as I am aware of third party or independent candidates, I will update the site with their information.

I didn't mean why are they not listed here. I meant...why are there not more running?
